Plastic water bottles vs Aluminum

Often times, when you enter a grocery store in search of a drink, you have a choice between plastic or aluminum . You may think both are on equal footing in terms of their health and environmental impacts, but there are some important differences between the two.

One of the main advantages of aluminum is the fact that it does not contain Bisphenol A (BPA), which is found in plastic bottles. The main concern with BPA is its possible health risks, especially in terms of its link to diseases like cancer.

We all know by now that there aren’t many advantages to plastic or plastic bottles. They end up discarded carelessly and find their way into rivers and oceans where they cause injury and death to marine life.

Looking at the two materials from an environmental standpoint, aluminum comes out on top again. Although both can be recycled, only 10% of plastic bottles actually are, in comparison to 50% of cans. Although we all know that plastic isn’t often recycled like it should be,, somehow the plastic water bottle market in the US is on the rise and growing at about 7.3% compounded annual growth rate through 2025. Isn’t that ironic, although we all know the negative impacts, the majority continue to buy bottled water at the market. In fact, it is anticipated to witness a higher growth as compared to carbonated drinks on account of better health benefits and added nutrients, regardless of the fact that it’s terrible for the planet.

So how can we make a real impact? If you’re able to get your hands on aluminum cans or bottles that are made from 100% recycled materials, they should be your first choice when shopping for beverages. Brands like Just Water, Kopu and Proud Source are a great option! They also have a low transportation footprint and ease of recyclability.

Keep in mind, aluminum isn’t the perfect solution. The extraction of raw bauxite which is used to make them is detrimental to the planet. That said, at Three Good we’ve searched high and low for a 100% compostable bottle and it doesn’t exist. We do choose to work with brands that have done their best in terms of sustainability (like Just Water, Kopu and Proud Source). They’ve had their fair share of challenges finding the perfect solution, but the main concern for us is that there’s awareness and effort in doing what’s best for both the planet and our bodies.

So what’s the final verdict? If you’re faced with a choice between plastic and aluminum, aluminum is the winner, both for your body and the environment. Ditch the single serving plastic bottles and plastic water dispensers in the workplace, and opt for something that assists with the global environmental crisis, rather than worsening it.
